Names, Great Names
An Associated Press/Reuter news article reported from Beijing recently that Chinese people, according to the state media, may soon allow children to take a combination of their parents' family names to avoid confusion. Under a proposal sent to police departments in the country by the Ministry of Public Security, parents called Zhou and Zhu would have four options when naming their newborn. Their child's surname could be Zhou, Zhu, Zhouzhu or Zhuzhou.
The newspaper said the reason for the proposal was because the limited number of surnames meant too many people end up with the same name. In April, a survey reported by Xinhua News Agency said that Wang was the most common surname in China, with about 93 million people sharing the name. That was followed by Li with about 92 million and Zhang with about 87 million. Wong (Huang) comes in 7th.
The venerable Chinese Academy of Sciences has reported that at least 100,000 people share the name of "Wang Tao,"
This is indeed very interesting news to me. As we all know that for somewhat 3000 years Chinese surnames are always limited in number and Chinese given names always have no limits. Duplications do occur occasionally in history. However, confusions? I have never heard of it and let alone it requires the state and the high learning institute to take any action.
The problem seems to surface in recent years when too many Wong families name their children to “Ting Ting” or “Ching Ching”. The beauty and sophistication of a Chinese given name are hence lost in the process. Now it appears the fad becomes an administrative nightmare. The state has to do something to prevent a whole Grade 12 class from becoming a team of Wong Ting Ting’s.
However, the remedy may be worse than the disease. Imagine the daughter of Zhouzhu marries the son of Wongting. They have a lovely child. They want to name their child legally by the combination of their surnames. Therefore, the adorable newborn will have a surname of a quite tongue twister “Zhouzhuwongting”. The fad carries on. Another generation later we will see surnames like “Zhouzhuwongtingchanwuzhangli”. What a fun to build a family tree. But wait! They cannot have the same choice by naming their child with combination of names as their fellow citizens because the state decreed that a name cannot have more than six characters. If they give the child a single name, there will be a fight in the family on what the sixth character should be.
Another problem seems to be that many Chinese women are marrying foreigners these days. How can the state deny the right of a young Chinese lady by the name of Ting Ting Zhouzhu, whose husband happens to be Arthur Schopenhauer, to name their product of love “Schopenhauerzhouzhu?” Twenty years later the state may need a super computer just to keep track of all these double-barrel or quadruple-barrel names. Can that be a conspiracy by Bill Gates and his Microsoft Empire to boost his business?
I am not sure what will happen to those minority Chinese whose names already exceed the six-character rule. Are they required to chop off their surnames to conform?
西人的名字除了姓、Given name,還可以有一串在中間,像查理斯王子是Charles Philip Arthur George,不過平時省掉一些吧了。
刪除沒有有這些 middle name(s),他們同名同姓的也很多。
Again for entertainment
