The son of a colleague of mine was killed in a horrific car accident in Victoria last week. He was driving from Adelaide to Melbourne and swerved to the incoming lane and was swept over by a truckie. Seems like to be fatique resulting dozing off while driving.

This should remind us not to take those "Drozy Drivers Die" signages on the roads too lightly!

MOTORCYCLE police have blamed pressure to meet management's traffic-stop quotas for the increasing roll toll because it means they have to go for soft targets on busy city roads rather than keeping dangerous roads safe.

The damning summary of why police have struggled to keep the road toll down since a low in 2008 is included in a University of Adelaide study of the SA Police's controversial plan to restructure its highway patrol and motorcycle police patrol sections, reducing motorcycle numbers.

The study was commissioned by the Police Association to back its case against the changes and included two days of taped interviews with motorcycle police in which some blamed a number of police management decisions for the increasing road toll.

Some of them said they were forced to target busy roads where they knew they would "get the numbers" to meet management-imposed targets for pulling people over, not "minor rural roads where many fatalities happen".
The report, Assessing the effectiveness of the proposed restructure of traffic policing in South Australia, states the views of some police that: "A lot of crashes occur on non-major arterial highways.

SAPOL want traffic police to meet benchmarks, meaning that they will be on major arterial roads to get the benchmarks. They set up in positions where they know they will get the numbers and not on minor rural roads where many fatalities happen."

Deputy Commissioner Gary Burns attacked the comments by officers as "ill-informed and inaccurate".

"Of SAPOL's 4400 members only about a dozen officers contributed to this report - none of them being from the senior executive," he said.

The report was commissioned by the association after SA Police announced it wanted to cut motorcycle numbers from 50 to 22. A compromise cut to 36 has since been reached.

Other decisions blamed for the increasing road toll included:

SECONDMENT of motorcycle traffic officers to other duties.

RESTRICTIONS on city-based motorcycle police operating in rural areas.

LESS overtime allowed for traffic police to go to country areas.

    Police to review 'under-resourced' taskforce

ANTI-HOON police officers are forced to "beg, steal and borrow" unmarked cars and other equipment from unrelated units because of under-resourcing, frontline officers have revealed.

Several patrol officers told The Advertiser yesterday that Taskforce Diagonal had inadequate equipment to tackle hoon driving.

Hoon behaviour allegedly claimed another life at the weekend. Riverland and West Adelaide footballer Corey Siemers, 17, died after his car collided with a Holden Commodore, which was allegedly racing a dark-coloured Japanese sports car on Marion Rd, Park Holme, about 10.40pm on Saturday.

His female passenger, 18, remains in a critical condition in Flinders Medical Centre.

A Renown Park man, 24, was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail by a magistrate.

The man will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court in August. Police are seeking the driver of a Japanese sports car and his blonde-haired female passenger, after security footage from nearby businesses revealed they would have seen the crash unfold.

The tragedy comes while Taskforce Diagonal is again under review amid rumours within police ranks the highly successful unit will be disbanded on June 30 or scaled down.

The six-officer taskforce was formed about 11 months ago but was not issued with its own fleet of vehicles.

Officers have to regularly wait several hours for a car to become available for patrols or share other equipment, sources say.

A high-level meeting this week will review the operation of the taskforce, which has arrested and charged 39 hoons, seized 55 vehicles, reported 87 drivers for burn-outs or related offences and issued 367 defect notices in nine months to mid-April.

Road Safety Minister Jack Snelling and taskforce boss Inspector Phil Newitt have denied it will be disbanded.

But sources say several Diagonal officers had already been assigned to other jobs.

Insp Newitt said no decision on disbanding the taskforce had been made "at the moment".
