Chris, how are the Chinese in Australia judged by the local Australians?
I was born in Hong Kong 或 I am from Hong Kong, 永遠不提China這個字。
Below was what I have written and posted on FB just yesterday regarding similar issue:
Radio news this morning said a recent survey told that most did not want any more migrants to come in Australia for they feared about their own jobs, infrastructures could not cope etc.
This is nonsense; Australia has been the 2nd largest migrant nation in the world after the US, and it seems to be working well so far. However, Australia is aging too, which is why the last Libs Government actually paid those young parents to breed more, e.g., so suddenly many women left their jobs to stay at home raising kids in the years past.
In fact among elsewhere on this globe, aging has become a big problem and every responsible government has to deal with it through viable plans and strategies. Migration intakes being a usual tool, and everywhere wants to grasp skilful migrants, not necessarily rich ones. So, shutting down our borders is totally unnecessary, which is highly likely resulted from a loaded question on the survey paper. It certainly do not represent the majority view on this issue and therefore cannot be rely upon at all. No wonder when I search all major newspapers online this morning, I cannot find anything about such news report."
As the economy and standard of life of Mainlanders improves, they must learn to behave themselves in restaurants, shopping malls and public transports. The first thing they should do is to reduce their voice, and the second thing is to follow the order.
When you say a person "behaves well" in public, you are essentially saying that they have good manners instead of high moral principles.
刪除The main difference lies in the fact that the former is changeable and readily noticeable and the latter hidden and defying change. Of course, once you are on the Shenzhen side of the border, you see lots of noveau-riche Mainlanders who look really vulgar and crude. But it seems the elevation effect of wealth on good manners is very prominent on the second generation, sometimes, the third generation--depending on how much you read/travel, and learn the ways of the outside world; many of Mainland students studying overseas behave totally appropriately---hardly making you suspect their "bandit" origins. (Well, that makes me sound a Lamarkist.) This is, perhaps, because, the want/will to be respected/ accepted is universal---when the younger generation Mainlanders can afford, say, to perfume themselves and to go the extra mile in order not to look as if uneducated---they are, essentially, cultivating good manners--and this proves manners--good or bad---is not that hard to change after all. (By the way, the same is also true of cultures, which is constantly undergoing changes.)
As for moral principles, well, that is the hard part---although other races/ nations are not to fare better than Mainland Chinese, who have more scope to exploit the basest aspect of human nature---a "privilege" comes from its cronyism, and flawed legal system.
To be fair, this imperfection of moral principles will not impact as violently as the bad manners simply because it is hidden---of course, as long as he is good-natured/ sensible enough to be law-abiding, and not like the reckless Ferrari driver in Singapore.
After all, culturally speaking, Hong Kong is very "Chinese"---in some regards, more Chinese than Mainlanders are, who enshrine Marxist Communist doctrines, which is very un-Chinese; and for reasons that Hong Kongers are behaving better---I can think of four reasons: 1. They are better educated 2, the law is more impartial in Hong Kong. 3. They are well-off enough to go the extra mile--i.e. take care of their public image, mind their manners, etc. 4. Hong Kong is better integrated to the outside world--thus many of the barbarian aspects of Chinese culture is compromised. (Think how shocked those White dudes must have been when they first saw Chinese people abused their women by binding their feet!)
Hong Kong is very "Chinese"---in some regards, more Chinese than Mainlanders"
