英語淺談:a, an, the

本講提要:

搞笑的OEC(Oxford English Course for Hong Kong) 課文
A man, a pan, a man and a pan, a pan and a man.

a, an 和 the 的讀音

5 個響音(vowel): a, e, i, o, u

an apple, an egg, an immigrant, an ox, an umbrella, 但是 a university;

講 a song, 但是 an "S",,a road,但是 an "R", a lemon,但是 an "L"。為甚麼?

They caught A shark, not THE shark.

  2. 有個小提議,不如在講課的尾聲,
    再朗讀一小篇有趣又相關的短文,
    因有時聽連續的句子比較好理解。

  3. An S not a S.
    An R not a R.

I did not notice that until I watched American movies and heard the native speakers saying this way.
The recent one is the 'warm bodies'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07s-cNFffDM
The zombie said 'I think it starts with an R...'

That's why I always think the problem of English teaching in Hong Kong is out of context. Lots of English teachers in education system may know a lot of things about academic English, such as the approaches to analyse the language, the important writers in literary history... But all of them don't know a single thing about English pop culture such as Lady gaga or Sherlock (BBC TV drama series 2010), the girl with the dragon tattoo... You don't have to like it, but, at least, you should know it.

    1. 所以學語言不要局限在課室之內。
      看電影和電視是學活英文的好方法,但是一般人都是為了娛樂來看動作和劇情,沒有怎樣注意人家怎樣講,有甚麼和自己講的不同之處----自己有沒有需要改。

  4. 請教版主, it's not 跟it isn't有分別嗎? 我自己慣了講it's not (eg. it's not your fault).哪種說法比較地道?

    謝謝!

    1. It's not 和 It isn't 意思是完全沒分別,一樣是地道的口語。
"It's not your fault" 可能比 "It isn't your fault" 通行一點,我相信是講來比較流暢順口的關係。

    2. 'It's not your fault.' sounds like faster.
'It isn't your fault.' sounds like slower.

It seems that the difference is the formality.

'It's not your fault!' The speaker is emphasizing his meaning by shouting.
'It isn't your fault.' The speaker is gently explaining the problem.
